Correction: website for IDEA, U.S. Dept. of Ed., Individuals With Disabilities Education Act.

Sorry, everyone - I make a point of checking links which I site in a post to avoid mistakes.

Unfortunately, I didn't check until today, and found the link to IDEA is not www, but instead:
http://idea.ed.gov/

As a note to those who found my post to represent me as quite confrontational during IEP meetings, I would like to add this.

I began the IEP process as we all do. An open mind and grateful for the professionals who were going to help my child cope in the school environment.

IEP: The good, the bad and the ugly (transferred from autismfunhouse.com)

For you, Christine!

Yesterday, a mother expressed her frustration over her son’s treatment in school. An autistic child, he was referred to as “unfocused” and the mother added one more brick to the wall of heartbreak we experience at the hands of others.

I want to express the need for parents to be fully aware of their rights and responsibilities as parents. The following websites provide crucial information for understanding the process of the IEP and special needs children.

Building your support network

With my son turning five in a few weeks, I am still relatively new to our journey with Autism. I can remember a time when he was two and our family was in crisis. My husband and I could not understand his behavior. We had moved over 200 miles away from any family and had not yet been able to establish ourselves in our new community or make friends. We had no experience with Autism and could not understand what our child was trying to tell us. Frustration set in and depression ruled my days. I can remember holding my head in my hands and thinking "Please - I need help.

Should a child with a documented ASD in his IEP be punished for being unfocused?

I am starting to lose my Zen...

It is now the second time that my nine year old son comes home from school with a note saying that he was punished for being unfocused. Fortunately he was not physically restrained or beaten up but he did have to walk for five minutes alone at recess. Does this make sense? It certainly does not make sense to me.

"A Dose of Controversy"??

After watching Dateline NBC "A Dose of Controversy" I am more confused about shots than before I watched it?? Are they good? Are they bad? Who knows? I can't understand how some doctors can say that vaccinations definitely do not cause autism? But, everything else about autism is a complete mystery?? I am no doctor but that just plain does not make any sense to me. Dr. Wakefield is the only one that made any sense on that show. I guess they want us to stay confused. Hey, they should have named it "A Dose of Confusion". What do you think??

The Science Behind Dr. Wakefield

I have just watched the Sunday Morning Today Show segment previewing the interview with Dr.Andrew Wakefield and Dr. Paul Offitt. Matt Lauer gave the impression that there is no science that has been published supporting Dr. Wakefield's hypothesis in the ten years since it was published in the Lancet. He gave the initial impression that no one other than Dr. Wakefield has worked on this hypothesis.

Sorry, Thoughtful House

A friend recently emailed asking my take on the upcoming Dateline program that addresses autism and vaccines.

Here's my take. It will not make much of a difference one way or the other. Let me rephrase that. It will be a feel-good piece for NBC that portrays them to be a "hard-hitting news organization" while at the same time helping advance the pharma mantra of “don’t hesitate – vaccinate!”
