Lessons from horses and non-verbal communication

A year ago I attended a workshop with horses that taught me the power of non-verbal communication, which transformed my life and my relationship with my son, Ian. He's eight, non-verbal and was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. I share my story to provide hope and possibility that you can connect with your child on a deeper level beyond words.

April is Autism Awareness Month....Again

It is with mixed emotions that I once again write about autism and autism awareness. I tire of hearing myself tell all I know about autism and fear you may too. I can’t say as though I’d blame you. But please, let me tell you why I do what I do. I know most, if not all, of you are aware that we have a child with autism. He is now eight. We have been on this journey for the past six plus years.

Your child may not need that booster shot and the law is on your side.

I have a beautiful four and a half year old boy with autism. In our case he showed signs since birth, but was not diagnosed until after the age of two, after his initial MMR vaccine. After so much angst, expense, tears and most of all, effort we were making progress towards healing him. Our son Emerson, "Little Em" was finally starting to say words and look us in the eyes, then came time for his MMR booster shot. We were sick to our stomachs wondering if this booster would cause regression and thwart all our efforts.

Are our children the Canary in a Coal Mine?

The diagnosis of autism devastates more families every day. A diagnosis doesn't just affect a child and his immediate family. It touches extended family, friendships, social gatherings, schools and communities as well.

This is a public health issue of the highest priority. We need to join together and speak for our children.

Children with autism are here to teach us to clean up the mess we've made of our environment and to stop putting toxic chemicals into our bodies.

PLEASE SUPPORT MY AUTISM FAMILY CENTER!!!

I have a deep love and passion for working with children & adolescents with Autism. Over the last 11 years, I have spent countless hours dedicating myself to several children and their families. After working in a variety of settings, I noticed a common trend between conventional therapeutic modalities that I found problematic. Most programs for children with autism only focused on the child with the diagnosis, ignoring an essential dynamic of the child’s life: their family.

Blog post inspired by World Autism Awareness Day on Friday

I wanted to share the post from my blog at www.afterautism.com on Friday which I wrote as my way to create awareness for our children and our families. Please feel free to forward to anyone you think would find it useful. Together, our voice will be heard. Thank you AutismOne for bringing parents together in this wonderful forum and providing an amazing place for us to support, share and learn from each other.
