Ignorant Things

Q: I want to know what ignorant things that people have done and said to you or your child when your out in public or on the internet. Family is included in this question.

Here is what happened to me yesterday I brought Candy to the dentist and she started screaming and biting her hand and scratching people around her in the waiting room!! And it seemed like we were waiting for a long freakin time let me tell ya!! I got that alien look from everybody in the room!! I should of charged a admission fee for this show!! I could of made some big $$ today. LoL!!

Almost all of our family turned their backs on us?? I think that hurts worst then when some jerk on the street does it to you.

Sharing some comments on this blog from my fb friends

Adrienne Crampton "says" We were @ a vocational centre 4 ppl w/intellectual disabilities. No probs w/ our son behaviour-wise. While waiting 4 a s/visor 2 interview us, a woman in the office started mouthing off about the benefits of euthanasia @ birth..."4 some of these kids!" I had enough, went to the counter & asked if she would advocate euthanasia for brain damaged car accident victims, mercury poisoned dementia pts, etc. Another woman came 2 the counter, blushing furiously, but trying 2 make ME stop!!!!!! I asked if we cld wait somewhere else where we cldn't hear the woman who wld kill others who were already faced w/ major challenges in their lives. We finally got in2 the interview room & I related the conversation 2 the s/visor & said that I thought we must have come 2 the wrong place - surely they wldn't employ ppl w/ such views, as "these kids" were providing her w/ employment 4 a start! The s/visor said he didn't think Dan wld fit in there anyway, b4 Dan had even opened his mouth!

Narelle Schwartz "says" Rude stares and comments, pointing and stuff. good comments like that child just needs a good smack!! My family have also been a**holes but thats another story. lol

Joanne Trueman "says" Had comments such as 'Can't you shut that thing up?' , 'She just needs a good slap!' and 'Kids like that shouldnt be allowed out in public!'. Makes me soooooooooo angry. Plus the usual stares and snide comments!

Tamara Edwards "says" We mostly get stares! When i hear rude comments i get right back with em cuz i have a smart ass mouth and nobody is gona make my baby feel less than when im around! When he makes his noises i just say he's expressing himself the way god intended! If children ask what's wrong with him or why he doesn't talk i explain it to them and that's usually enough. At least they ask! Adults are just plain ignorant! Good thing his mom can be a real bitch! LOL

Constructive advice

How about this: if folks post inappropriate and unfortunate things that have happened, how about if we also post constructive suggestions/solutions - either the blogger or another person who is commenting. Here, I'll start:

There are some pediatricians' or other doctors' offices that will minimize the wait time as best as possible if they know that a family is bringing a child who has challenges with waiting. Many doctors' offices now have playrooms and more private waiting areas or extra exam rooms that are not in use at all time. There are also dentists who specialize in special needs children. When/if possible, it might be constructive to investigate these types of options in advance.

It would also be good to try to figure out whether there is something in the physicians' waiting room environment that is particularly irritating the child (e.g., fluorescent lighting).

Great Advice Teri! But, one

Great Advice Teri! But one time I would just like to go out with my daughter and just relax and not think about anything!! God, I miss that so much.

try this

In my purse I carry some business-size cards that have information on them about autism, as well as an explanation of the behavior my som might be exhibiting at the time. When things get rough, and Noah starts to rumble, I've at times handed these cards out to the few people who have taken notice of the situation. While they read the card, it not only distracts them from what I'm dealing with, making me less stressed about the situation, but it also educates them about autism. I have a few of these cards from TACA and I bought a stack from, well, I can't remember right now! LOL! I think it's bedtime! When I remember, and I will eventually, I'll let you know where I got the other cards. They really do work and it's a great way to get info on autism out there to the public.

Hi Daina, I think the cards

Hi Daina,

I think the cards are a great idea!! Please let me know where you got em from. I'll probably need a lifetime supply of those puppies! LoL!!

The cards

Hello! I got the cards at autism.link.com
I'm sure that by now, there are other places on-line that carry their own version. I just can't tell you how handy these little cards are! Yes, I too bought a boat load the first time around! :) It was money well spent.
Hope you have a peaceful night!
