I hired a boy in the neighborhood with Asperger's to help me clean up another neighbors yard after a tree fell. I knew he wanted money to go to a Royals game so he was more than happy to help.

All I asked him to do was help me pick up the branches and put them in a trailer to take to the dump. I told him "M, we need to pick up this sticks and put them in the trailer".

Off he went, picking up one stick at a time and putting them in the trailer. I joked with him and said "M I am not paying you by the hour."

He just looked confused and continued one stick at a time.

Then I thought about what I had said.

I stopped him and said "M, we need to move this pile of sticks into the trailer."

"Oh" he went. He then proceeded to pick up piles of sticks instead.

It taught me a lesson. And he had a great time at the Royals game.

EXAMPLE: (from a few years ago) The trash chore..
I'd usually bought the "string-pull" bags, but this time I'd grabbed the wrong package.. I brought home the "pull-together-the-tabs" bags.
Over the next week or so, Alex had let the trash get to OVERFLOW, and when he finally did pull the bag from the bin and put it in the car, the ends of the bag were not gathered and tied..... Further, the trash bin wasn't getting re-lined.
I was lost.. I thought he was just "testing", or something.. After the third time that this had happened, I walked into the kitchen while he was in mid-task. Alex had pulled the bag out, he'd set it on the floor, grabbed his jacket.. then I casually said, "hey, would you please tie it up this time, and re-line the bin when you come back in?"
The next thing I knew, Alex was in tears. Okay, BIG HUG time, and "hey, what are all the tears about..what happened?" His response? "The stupid trash bags! How am I suppose to tie it when it doesn't have a tie thing??" Oh man-n-n....
~ First, I tried: "the shirt-tail tabs..pull the corners together and tie them, got it?" "Huh?"
~ Then I tried, "grab opposite corners, tie them, then grab the remaining two corners and
tie those".. Again, I got, "What???". hmmmmm...
~ Maybe the operative word is: 'together' "Ya know..tie them together?" Nope, that
wasn't it.. And fresh tears started to roll down from his eyes..
** THEN, it dawned on ME..(dumb mom anyway).. "Okay kiddo, maybe we've both had a hard day. How about if we work together to do it? You help me to tie it, and I help you carry it to the car, okay?" He helped me.. I helped him.. whatever..; It had dawned on me that a demonstration was in order, and I'd just learned it the hard way, (through
my son's tears).
