The Age of Advocacy

The new decade has begun and I would like to thank all of you who have supported our mission and helped us along the way. Age of Autism was very kind in naming Teri and me Couple of the Year and I’m very touched by their support.

The new decade brings with it many of the obstacles of the past, but it also suggests something more than a change of date. If you put your ear close to the ground and listen very carefully you can hear it. There is a new dynamic at play that yearns for change.

Change is something that always seems to come more slowly the more fervently wished for. The change we wished for could not possibly come to pass until as a community we reached a point of maturity that put aside wishful thinking and developed the skills and tools necessary to change the future. We have.

Welcome to the age of advocacy.

Okay, Lisa, Robert & Sandy - Roll up your sleves and get ready to get your hands dirty, your face grimy, your arms and legs weary from exertion and your back exhausted from lifting.

This is the year we have all been waiting for since our children were first diagnosed. This is the year we have all been praying for since we first became members of the community. This is the first year we have the pieces in place - the autism organizations, visibility, know how, passion and parents - to take us to the next level. We have reached a critical mass of brainpower and manpower.

What we have done so far is nothing compared to what we have waiting in store for us. We are going to confront those individuals and institutions who have allowed this to happen. We are going to engage across a variety of platforms and we are going to demand change.

The days of wishful thinking are over. There is not going to be a knight in shining armor that comes to our rescue. The cavalry is not on its way.

The community has reached the realization that we are the change and we are beginning to become what we must be to end the epidemic and save our children.

There will be a rally, the afternoon of Wednesday, May, 26. The community must come out in force and bring as many others as possible with us. We will show our unity and integrity and those who are part of the problem will hear a different voice that comes from a position of moral authority, purpose and power.
