NAA ACTION ALERT

The Preventing Harmful Restraint and Seclusion in Schools Act

Fellow parents at the National Autism Association feel the introduction of HR 4247, the Preventing Harmful Restraint and Seclusion in Schools Act, by Chairman George Miller (D-CA) and Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) is a critical and necessary start to ending dangerous, even deadly, restraint and seclusion practices in our special education classrooms.

Restraining Autism Kids

Whatz Up with restraining autism kids!?! I hate that crap!! Candace was dragged at school once, they said she did not want to transition? They ripped the skin off her back!! I did call the police and made a report. The police detective said "well maybe that's how they handle autism kidz? Freak'n useless!! Candy is nonverbal as well. It's scary for us parents, we have to trust everyone!! I have no way of knowing if someone does something too her. There are so many CRAZY people out there!!

Did it ever happen to your child? I am looking for suggestions or comments. Thanks!!

Answer to Autism Lifts Parents' Faith, Chromosome 15q duplication syndrome

Article that a friend sent to me by: Mike Porath

I will never forget the phone call. My wife put the doctor on speakerphone. We sat down and shared a hard look across the kitchen table.

"Well, we did find something unusual. It wasn't anything we were looking for. Your daughter's 15th chromosome has an extra part to it. It's duplicated. She has 47 chromosomes."

For two years we had visited doctors up and down the East Coast looking for answers. Annabel, a few months past her second birthday, still couldn't walk, spoke just a few words and rarely offered us a smile.

Thank You for Fitness

For the last 5 months the students of Giant Steps Illinois, Inc a therapeutic day school for children with autism have continued to challenge me. As the Fitness Coordinator I am blessed to work with the students in large groups (10+ students). However, without the help of the one-on-one aid's (program assistants) this program would not be possible.

Measuring Progress

I recently spoke to a mom who told me that her child is really flourishing. He is using more and more spontaneous language every day and they are delighted to hear him communicating with them.
