In this talk, Zach Bush, MD, advances understanding the relationship between our microbiome and the gut-brain axis. In the last two years, scientific research from many university laboratories has demonstrated that an astounding 90% of the serotonin neurotransmitter produced in the human body is made by the interaction of bacteria and the lining of the intestinal wall – not in the brain. This reversal of the previous model of the gut-brain axis provides a new foundation to our understanding of the pathogenesis of ASD and offers new targets for intervention.
