Autism, My Son's Grade School Experience
Jordan’s grade school experience was absolutely fantastic. His conversation was limited to three word sentences. Talking to his peers was difficult. Jordan’s teachers, therapists and I worked together as a team guiding Jordan with expanding his Individual Educational Goals, continually pushing him to greater heights. We found out that placing Jordan in environments where he could be around other children was a wise choice.
Gently pushing Jordan to interact with his classmates, proved to be a great idea. Interestingly enough, we discovered that he is naturally competitive with himself, choosing to be the best he could be. This character trait has stayed with him.
The team and the educators discovered other factors that helped him progress in the school environment. It consisted of,
•Using sensory learning and maximizing with the five physical senses.
•Using accelerated reading which is another name for reading as many books as possible during the week.
•This engaging active process in reading and comprehension was a self-esteem booster.
•Peer team building giving a Jordan opportunities to discuss the literature and break language barriers proved to be very successful.
I feel the teachers and the school team brought out Jordan’s strengths and this was extremely motivating and allowed him to shine.
Yes it takes a whole village to raise a child, and this was true in Jordan’s experience. I believe had it not been for consistent team work of all members of the Elsie Johnsons staff, progress would have been delayed for my son. The faculty persevered, and their compassion was no longer a word but true substance that would rapidly move Jordan to the next level of his development.
