Do autism myths hinder potential?
At first when I thought about "Autism Myths", the most irritating one that came to mind is the idea of an Autistic Savant. That is to say, that often when people hear your child has Autism, they immediately and expectantly ask you what his "Super Skill" is. "Wow! So, is he like, amazing in math and count numbers in his head and stuff?" "Can he tell you on what day of the week I was born?" "Is he Artistic?" "A musical genious?"
The fact of the matter is, that although Autism is on the steady rise, autistic savants are still a rarity, which most of you reading this blog already know.
But aside from my annoyance at a person who instead of seeing my son's miraculous accomplishments to be just that and instead point out yet another thing, he CAN'T do, I realized that there are a lot of other "myths" that float around WITH-IN the Autism Community.
So as not to offend, I want to make it clear that I LOVE the autism community!! It is encouraging and helpful to say the least. But having worked with caregivers of different levels of schooling and experience in various aspects of my life, I can't help but notice some disagreements on
