AutismOne: The Cutting-Edge Autism Conference
TM
Welcome to the AutismOne 2014 Conference, the twelfth Chicago event. Every year, we present
cutting-edge research and therapy information to parents and professionals. As a result, much
fruitful discussion and treatment have followed, and children have recovered from the diagnostic
label of autism or significantly improved. We are pleased to work cooperatively with courageous
speakers, companies, and organizations of integrity that value the health and happiness of
children and families even when it might mean personal sacrifice, telling “inconvenient” truths, or
not being popular in the mainstream. These are our friends — because they are the children’s
friends. Thank you for joining us. ~~Ed & Teri Arranga

Becoming an Informed & Empowered Advocate for Your Child
Although parents are the most important members of the IEP team and know far more about their child's challenges and abilities, they often feel
at a disadvantage and outgunned at IEP meetings. How can they begin to leverage their in-depth knowledge of the child into effective advocacy?
The key to unlocking effective advocacy is understanding the critical fundamentals of documentation, using a strategy of specificity,
deconstructing challenges, realizing the roles of professionals involved with their child and simply becoming an organized advocate with a
focused mission. This session is all about empowering the inner advocate with easy-to-understand tips and strategies for parents of kids affected
by autism.
Dave Asprey — Friday, 4:30, Cassatt
Is the founder and CEO of The Bulletproof Executive, is a Silicon Valley investor and technology entrepreneur who spent 15 years and over
$300,000 to hack his own biology. He upgraded his brain by over 20 IQ points, lowered his biological age, and lost 100 pounds without calorie
counting or exercise. The Financial Times calls him a “bio-hacker who takes self-quantification to the extreme of self-experimentation.” His writing
has been published by the New York Times and Fortune and he’s presented at Wharton, Kellogg, the University of California, and Singularity
University. Not only does Dave blog about his extensive knowledge and recent findings over at the his Bulletproof Exec blog, he also has a
number one rated podcast radio station and is the chairman of the Silicon Valley Health Institute.
A Bulletproof & Better Life
Dave Asprey’s work focuses on finding and eliminating all causes of neurological inflammation in order to increase human performance in those
on the spectrum or not. He is motivated by his personal experience having Asperger’s symptoms and ADD until his late 20’s. Dave Asprey’s
methods take into account high fat, low toxin nutrition, mold toxins, yeast, mercury, ozone, neurofeedback, HRV, lasers, and more. He lost 100
lbs, shed the Asperger’s behavior, and learned to have effortless focus, and today shares those methods in writing and in personal coaching.
Wiley & Sons published his first book, The Better Baby Book, outlining the program he and his wife followed to lower the risk of neurological
inflammation in their family.
CO-PRESENTERS
Anat Baniel, MA
Is a best-selling author, clinical psychologist and dancer, and the creator of the Anat Baniel Method™ -- a powerful practice that takes advantage
of the brain’s ability to change itself to heal body and mind. From 30 years of remarkable outcomes with thousands of children with special needs,
she developed the cutting-edge, scientifically-based NeuroMovement® approach for transforming the lives of the children and their families. Her
teaching is easy to follow, inspiring and life changing.
Neil Sharp, MD
Anat Baniel Method
Neil Sharp studied medicine at Cambridge University and Edinburgh University Medical School. He worked as doctor in the UK before leaving
medicine to pursue a career as a singer. In 2004 he discovered the work of Anat Baniel. He began studying with her and moved to the US in 2007
to collaborate with her in her practice and in coordinating research into the efficacy of her NeuroMovement® approach.
Saturday morning, 9:45, Guggenheim: Movement and the Brain -- The Two Elephants in the Room: Can Viewing ASD as a Brain/
Movement Disorder Lead to Breakthrough Outcomes for the Child on the Autism Spectrum?
We'll present a science-based, NeuroMovement® approach for helping the brain of the child with ASD to become a powerful learning brain. We'll
discuss the role movement plays in the ability of the brain to create effective physical, cognitive and emotional patterns of action. We'll introduce
the nine essentials - scientifically validated principles that awaken the remarkable capacities of the brain to change and transform the child in
surprising and seemingly miraculous ways.
Saturday afternoon, 2:45, Louvre 3: NeuroMovement: Tools for Taking Advantage of the Remarkable Capacities of the Brain to Change,
Turning the Child on the Autism Spectrum into a Brilliant Learner.
In this experiential workshop attendees will participate in movement lessons combined with the nine essentials to experience how their own brains
can change. Tools to apply with the child with ASD (from a few months to teenager) that replace repetitive exercises will be shown and practiced,
helping the brain of the child self organize at higher levels, catapulting the child to be able to feel, understand, move, and think in ways that
seemed unattainable before. Videos of sessions shown.

Marion Blank, PhD — Friday, 4:30, Avedon
Dr. Blank is an internationally renowned psychologist who specializes in language and cognitive development. She received her PhD at
Cambridge University in medical psychology and has worked over several decades conducting research, developing tests to assess language
development and designing programs to enhance that development in both the spoken (ASDLanguage) and written domains (ASDReading). Her
latest book is Spectacular Bond: Reaching the Child with Autism.
Spectacular Bond: Creating the Essential Relationship
All too many parents with children on the spectrum can only dream of a life without meltdowns, temper tantrums, sleepless nights, repeated
bargaining, interrupted meal times and on and on. But via the Spectacular Bond program, that dream can become reality. It starts by helping the
parent to see the overwhelming complexity that the everyday world poses for the child and to simplify that world both physically and
interpersonally. Then focusing on the neglected realm of inhibition, the program builds patterns of slow, effective behavior into all major aspects of
the child's life--eating, dressing, playing, etc. Within a few weeks, the child displays more effective interpersonal patterns that include greater
calm, reduced tuning out, and diminished tantruming. This base is crucial in enabling the child to be open to learning from others, thereby
benefiting more fully from the intervention programs s/he receives.

Effective Therapies for Autism: Ranging from Brain Physics to Immunological Interventions for the Gut and the Brain
Over the past 17 years, I have attempted to explore and document what forms of therapy work for individuals with autism-related issues. The key
is the individual rather than the statistics of group responses. One child may need intensive metal detoxification, while another needs advanced
immunological treatments. One child may respond vigorously the hyperbaric oxygen, while another begins speaking in sentences after
transcranial magnetic therapy. This presentation will span the peer-reviewed literature to create an algorithm for how to address each case and
how best to determine which therapies will likely be effective. The goal is to focus on the individual needs and methodologies to determine best
practices.
Friday afternoon, 2:00, Cassatt:
Understanding the Endocannabinoid System in Autism and Its Implications for Therapeutics
Recent studies suggest abnormal cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2) signalling in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) extracted from
autistic children, implying the endocannabinoid system could be functionally involved in ASD-mediated immune impairments. Cannabinoid 1
receptors are present on neurons and microglial cells and additional research implicates these receptors in neuronal protection in a way which
may represent a therapeutic target in ASDs. Research will be presented.

We already know what happens to the brain in autism
Autism is a developmental disorder caused by heterochronic division of germinal cells. Evidence for this fact is based on the presence of
heterotopias and cortical dysplasias in the brains of autistic individuals. This mechanism appears to hold true for both idiopathic and syndromic
autism. Dr. Casanova’s specific area of focus recently has been the identification of risk factors that can propitiate germinal cell divisions in
genetically susceptible individuals with autism. Variations in the severity of an exogenous factor(s), timing during brain development, and genetic
susceptibility of the individual may account for clinical heterogeneity.

Thursday, 2:00, Guggenheim: Autism: A Neuroepigenetic Disorder of Brain Development
Brain development is driven by changes in methylation of DNA and histone proteins which combine to provide epigenetic regulation. Methylation
depends upon methionine synthase and vitamin B12. B12 status in the brain is distinct from the rest of the body, and brain levels of B12 are
markedly lower in autism, schizophrenia and normal aging. Recent studies of the epigenetic effects of gluten- and casein-derived opiate peptides
indicate their significance for development and life-long disease risk.

John Marshall Law School. In his 40 years in medicine, he and his practice have cared for over more than 50,000 children who were minimally or
not vaccinated at all. There is virtually no autism, asthma, allergies, respiratory illness, or diabetes in his unvaccinated children. He is founder and
medical director of Eisenstein Medical Centers, board certified by the American Board of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and a member
of the Illinois Bar.
No Shots, No School, No Work, NOT TRUE
All vaccine programs carry risk and questionable benefit. Therefore, the goal should not only be the prevention of a specific disease by
vaccination, but also the benefits must outweigh any potential long term negative side effects. In spite of the evidence disputing the benefits of
vaccines and mandated vaccine programs, hospitals, schools and state legislatures around the nation have been implementing vaccine mandates
for employees, under threat of termination from work and students with expulsion from schools. Dr. Eisenstein will explain the different legal
vaccine waivers and how you can write a legal vaccine waiver.

Preventing Violence in the ASD Family Through Understanding
Violence in an ASD family does not appear magically. By understanding the dynamics of stress on the ASD family, appropriate interventions can
be provided, thus reducing the probability that aggression will occur. After the fact, it is easy to understand why tragedies sometimes occur. To be
proactive, parents need to understand that there is always support and/or appropriate interventions available even when stress appears to reach
an unmanageable level. A biopsychosocial model of ASD family stress and violence prevention will be presented.

Mitochondrial dysfunction in children with autism spectrum disorder
Mitochondrial dysfunction is a prevalent metabolic abnormalities in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet it remains poorly understood. We
examined mitochondrial function in immune cell lines and fresh immune cells derived from ASD children. A significant subgroup of immune cells
had mitochondrial which became dysfunctional when exposed to reactive oxygen species. These data supports the presence of a unique
metabolic endophenotype of ASD children with relatively worse developmental outcomes.

The New Health Conversation: The TDOS Syndrome
The TDOS Syndrome ™ (toxicity, nutritional deficiency, overweight, stress) demonstrates the ways these factors combine to have a deadly
impact. Our current health care system relies primarily on procedural interventions rather than preventative interventions. The TDOS Protocol
relies heavily on preventative interventional technologies and, when needed, natural procedural interventions. The TDOS Protocol is an exciting
new preventative interventional approach to attack the TDOS Syndrome.

Glutathione Advances in the Treatment of Autistic Spectrum Disorder - Past, present and future trends
Dr. Jimmy Gutman presents a summary of how this critically-important molecule relates to the pathology and treatment of autism. Glutathione has
at times been called the master antioxidant, the toxic waste neutralizer of the body, and food for the immune system. He will review its history and
show how recent studies have shown great promise as a potential treatment for autism. Glutathione has been noted to be generally deficient in
the population of autistic spectrum disorder patients. Dr. Gutman explains in part the immunological, and detoxification-related difficulties inherent
due to low glutathione levels. Aspects of glutathione function, benefits, and supplementation will be covered in an academic yet easy-to-
comprehend presentation.

THE NEUROLOGICAL INCOHERENCE OF BIOMEDICAL APPROACHES TO AUTISM
It has become clear that genes alone do not create autism, and we also see that many people benefit markedly from biomedical approaches. But
some people also get stuck. Weakness in our understanding of what we are doing for the brain, what is in the way of the brain's full flowering,
and what the brain needs to heal and function optimally -- these all may be parts of the problem. The electrical activities of the brain operate at a
different level (or scale) and by different dynamics than the underlying biology of the cells and tissues that biomedical interventions target. The
biomed community has not deeply thought through how metabolic and immune dysfunction challenges brain signaling or how treatment may
improve brain activity. Biomed people often fall back upon anatomic explanations that do not really have fidelity to what we observe clinically
because they are static and don't capture autism's changeability. Emerging science points to information that may prove useful in understanding
the mechanisms by which bottom-up, biomedical approaches produce brain functional improvement, and possibly also discern previously
unappreciated opportunities for improvement of brain function.

Dr. Brian Hooker, PhD — Friday, 3:15, Guggenheim
Dr. Hooker currently serves as associate professor of biology at Simpson University. He has worked in biotechnology research for 25 years and
has over 50 scientific publications, including recent work in the reanalysis of CDC studies that claim no relationship between vaccines and
neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Hooker has advocated for safer vaccines since 2004 and has a 16-year-old vaccine-injured son who has
been diagnosed with autism.
How to Lie to a Generation of Families - Malfeasance in the CDC's Vaccine Safety Program
Dr. Brian Hooker has submitted over 100 FOIA requests to the CDC regarding thimerosal and autism. The documents revealed CDC scientists
covered up the causal relationship between vaccines and autism. Dr. Hooker has also reanalyzed many of the foundational studies that CDC
used to claim that vaccines and vaccine components do not cause or contribute to autism. The subsequent reanalysis yields something vastly
different than the CDC's claims and belies the poisoning of a generation of children.

Using the Office of Civil Rights to HELP parents get and keep treatment funding
The Office of Civil Rights can be accessed as a potent ally in the search for behavioral and psychological treatment funding for children with
autism spectrum disorders. Children with ASD can be enrolled in Medicaid as a "family of one" in at least 36 states -- family income is not
counted -- and are thereby entitled under federal law (as a civil right) to funding for treatment that is "sufficient in amount, duration and scope to
reasonably achieve the purpose for which it is furnished." This treatment can include 1:1 behavioral support, ABA therapy and a host of other
treatments. HBOT has been funded under EPSDT, for example. This is truly "the greatest treatment funding secret ever concealed" and now the
Office of Civil Rights can be accessed to help parents overcome the obstacles that states have created to hide and obstruct access to EPSDT
funding.

population, investigation of those symptoms by the clinician to find their clinical organ(s) of origin and involvement, and then defining the disease
condition using tools readily available to the clinician. Presentation of these findings by the clinician to the bench scientist then allows laboratory
definition of the disease process in terms of mechanisms and pathways using tools not available to the clinician. Data obtained from such
laboratory evaluations are then analyzed by the clinician to search for additional clinical correlates and mechanisms that ultimately lead to
effective treatments and, hopefully, a cure. The back and forth flow of information over numerous cycles further refines and validates the data.
Specifically, this age-old and time-tested collaborative process has been at the heart of the evolving understanding of autism associated
inflammatory bowel disease. Beginning with the clinical symptomatic presentation of the disease, the attendees will be shown how the close
collaboration of a pediatric gastroenterologist and molecular biologist has succeeded in definitively defining this new disease and what new
information continues to emerge from this collaboration.

Susan Lee, JD — Saturday, 9:45, Montrose
Susan Lee is a legal advocate for vaccine-injured children and their families. She assisted with an amicus brief to the United States Court of
Appeals for the federal dircuit in Carson v. Secretary of Health and Human Services. She is the author of "Sacrificing Children's Safety for
Vaccine Supply: Nonexistent Safeguards for Remedying Mandatory Defectively Designed Vaccines." http://papers.ssrn.com/abstract=236471
Vaccine Safety Gaps: What You Ought to Know
Because vaccine manufacturers enjoy significant legal liability protection, the number of mandated childhood vaccines has drastically increased
since 1986. There is growing evidence that vaccines are neither safe nor effective, and the harms outweigh the benefits of vaccination. Current
vaccine policymaking affords vaccine manufacturers massive, guaranteed financial profits while comprising vaccine safety and restricting the
rights to vaccine injury compensation. There is credible evidence that the significant influence of vaccine manufacturers in all areas of vaccine
policymaking leaves little choice for parents and forces them to participate unwillingly or unknowingly in a dangerous and fraudulent financial
scheme. Based on the evidence, vaccine manufacturers have masterminded this scam to force children to bear the risk of receiving dangerous
vaccines. Since vaccine manufacturers are virtually insulated from legal liability vaccine-injured children are left with minimal or no legal redress.
There is growing evidence that vaccines have been knowingly damaging children for generations due to corruption, fraud and malfeasance.

Judy Mikovits, PhD — Friday, 4:30, Louvre 1 & 2
Dr. Mikovits earned her PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology from George Washington University. In her 35-year quest to understand and
treat chronic diseases, she has studied natural products chemistry, immunobiology of retroviral-associated inflammatory diseases, eipgenetics,
stem cell biology and drug development with the goal to understand complex biological issues in order to yield unbiased integrated, cutting-edge
diagnostics and treatments for patients and physicians impacted by some of the most challenging chronic diseases.
Environmental Causes of Autism—Investigate if you dare!
In 2006, Dr. Mikovits became attracted to the plight of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and autism. In only five years, she developed the
first neuroimmune institute from a concept to a reality and is primarily responsible for demonstrating the relationship between immune-based
inflammation and these diseases. In 2009, the identification of a retroviral association with ME/CFS and autism by her laboratory would forever
change her world as the diseases had theirs. In the fall of 2011, a mistake made by the original discoverers of XMRV was used to scapegoat Dr.
Mikovits and the patient communities, sending a clear message of the fate of anyone who dared to investigate environmental causes of autism.

Hypothyroidism and Down Syndrome: Treating the Patient, Not the Labs Results — Thursday, 10:00, Guggenheim
Nearly all children with Down syndrome require thyroid gland support. Diagnosis of hypothyroidism has greatly changed in the last 4 years.
Patients are no longer treated based on very obvious symptoms. Doctors need to return to a better understanding of the clinical signs and
symptoms of hypothyroidism and stop treating numbers on a page instead of treating patients. Tragically, many children with Down syndrome
who have obvious signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism are going untreated resulting in preventable delayed development. Dr. Peirson will
review the physiology of thyroid hormone and its connections to the neurological development and overall health of children with Down syndrome.

The Baby-Led Weaning Approach: An Excellent Feeding Option to Assist Babies with Down Syndrome in Transitioning to Solid Foods
Why is the use of a baby-led weaning approach an optimal way to introduce solids to babies with Down syndrome? Baby-led weaning is a child
directed feeding approach that exposes babies to a variety of healthy food choices, allowing them to develop their own food likes and dislikes
while simultaneously developing strong oral motor skills and feeding skills. Baby-led weaning also encourages and further develops fine motor
and self-feeding skills. This lecture will address implementation and healthy feeding choices that can positively impact the health of children with
Down syndrome and their families.

Autism Explained: Synergistic Poisoning from Aluminum and Glyphosate
The number of children diagnosed with autism in America has risen alarmingly over the past fifteen years, in exact step with the rise in the use of
glyphosate (Roundup) on corn and soy crops. Coincidence? I think not. In parallel, children in the United States have been burdened with an
increased aluminum load from the world's most comprehensive vaccination schedule. Glyphosate has a number of known biological effects that
align with the known pathologies associated with autism. Glyphosate also likely promotes aluminum uptake into the tissues. Aluminum, a well-
documented neurotoxin, is the established cause of dialysis dementia. I propose that aluminum accumulation in the brain, synergistically
promoted by glyphosate, is the principal cause of autism in the US.

genetics, biomarkers, therapeutics and prevention.
Jerry Tennant, MD, MD(H), PScD — Friday, 1:00, Cassatt
Dr. Tennant did the majority of the research for the VISX laser used in LASIK. While doing so, he inhaled viruses and got encephalitis and spent
about 7 years in bed. Traditional medicine had no solutions, so he began searching for a way to get well. He discovered that his brain was
running at -2 millivolts instead of the -50 it needed to heal. He then discovered how to restore the voltage so he could make new neurons that
worked. Now he teaches others how to heal the "incurable." www.tennantinstitute.com
Healing is Voltage: A New Medical Paradigm; Autism and Other Chronic Conditions
We are constantly wearing out our cells. We replace our macula every 2 days, the lining of our gut every 3 days, our skin every six weeks, our
liver every eight weeks, etc. Chronic disease occurs when we lose our ability to make new cells that work! Thus to correct any chronic disease,
we must examine what it takes to make new cells. Characteristic is the loss of the necessary voltage. Cells must run in an environment of -25
millivolts but must have -5 millivolts to make a new cell.

environmental, infectious, or stress-related triggers, to release pro-inflammatory and neurotoxic molecules. We recently showed that the peptide
neurotensin (NT), present in the brain, gut and skin, is increased in the serum of children with ASD both (a) 3-year old with autistic disorder and
(b) 4-10 years-old on the entire ASD spectrum. NT stimulates mast cells, responsible for allergic reactions, to secrete inflammatory mediators
including IL-6 and TNF, which have been shown to be increased in the brain of patients with ASD. During stimulation with NT, mast cell
mitochondria, commonly known for their cellular energy production, undergo fission and translocation to the cell surface where they secrete some
of their components outside the cell. These include DNA and ATP, which are misconstrued by the body as “innate pathogens” leading to an auto-
inflammatory response affecting specific brain regions responsible for behavior and language. Both NT and mtDNA can further activate brain
microglia and damage neurons leading to “Brain Immunity Storms” because they are not present all the same time, but may be provoked by
environmental, immune, infectious and stress triggers thus contributing to the pathology and symptoms of ASD.

Dr. Andrew Wakefield is an academic gastroenterologist. He received his medical degree from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School. He has
authored Callous Disregard, Waging War on the Autistic Child, and numerous scholarly papers.
The Legacy of Vaccine Injury
The emergence of disease epidemics will tend to lead with the most overt and clinically severe cases. These prototypic cases, at the leading edge
of the plague, herald many more affected individuals whose disease may be less severe and/or pervasive but, as will be proposed for the autism
epidemic, are representative of significant neurological injury that affects a wide range of cognitive functions in a substantial proportion of the
population. This talk considers the impact of a neurotoxic injury sustained across a population at a variable intensity and against a heterogeneous
pattern of susceptibility. This impact is considered from medical, societal, educational, economic, and military perspectives
Steve Walker, PhD — Friday, 2:00, Avedon
Stephen Walker, is associate professor of genomics and systems biology at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine. He is a
geneticist and molecular/developmental biologist. His research focuses on the use of genomic and bioinformatic tools for the evaluation of
specimens, derived from patients and control individuals, to better understand disease processes and to identify molecular signatures for
immediate diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
Molecular characterization of IBD in ASD children
The concept of chronic gastrointestinal symptoms in ASD children has long been a topic of discussion and debate in the field of pediatric
gastroenterology. Although some, but not all, ASD children with GI complaints clearly exhibit symptoms associated with classic inflammatory
bowel disease, diagnostic tools and treatment options for this population are still evolving. This talk will address the question: what useful
information have we learned via the molecular characterization of biospecimens from ASD children with ileocolitis?
William J. Walsh, PhD — Sunday, 8:45, Cassatt

internationally recognized expert on biochemical imbalances. His book Nutrient Power is the result of 30+ years of research and clinical
experience. His recent autism research includes chemical analysis of autism brain tissues, studies focusing on oxidative damage and oxidative
stress, and the role of epigenetics. www.walshinstitute.org
Brain-Directed Therapies for Autism Spectrum Disorders
A major barrier to autism recovery is the strong tendency for abnormal brain development. Common features of autism include a poverty of
synaptic connections, a leaky blood-brain barrier (BBB), incomplete maturation of parts of the brain, narrowed cortical minicolumns, and improper
connectivity of adjacent brain regions. In addition most ASD brains experience chronic inflammation, oxidative overload, and assault from toxic
metals. Advanced brain-directed therapies are needed to enable improved cognition, speech, and socialization. An important first step is to
normalize the brain's environment by improving BBB function and eliminating inflammation and excessive oxidative stress. New epigenetic
therapies have shown promise for normalizing activity at serotonin, dopamine, and NMDA receptors. In addition new approaches for enhancing
brain plasticity have shown promise.

5:00 pm-5:30 pm Q&A Panel Discussion
How to think about autism for practical purposes of biomedical therapy
Norman Schwartz, MD
We live in a world with so many chronic diseases. With 1 child in 68 now having an autism spectrum disorder, is autism a chronic disease with
etiology common to other illnesses? Dr. Norman Schwartz will cover pathways in the body that can be predictive of autism and its comorbid con-
ditions if perturbed by stressors. He will address the topic of epigenetics and what we need to add to our repertoire to bolster the body of parents-
to-be and of children to stave off autism as well as what to avoid.
Norman Schwartz, MD, is an integrative medicine specialist helping individuals and families who are dealing with Down syndrome, autism,
ADHD, and other complex chronic medical problems. Formerly director of integrative medicine for Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare in Wisconsin,
he is now in private practice with a special interest in the application of ecological principles to create a safer more sustainable world for present
and future generations.
A Critical Care Approach to the Child with Autism
Michele Kong, MD
This presentation will cover how to medically and critically assess a child with autism in an emergency, including consideration of mitochondrial
issues, what anesthesia is safe, what kinds of medication are safe, and how to dose.
Michele Kong, MD, is a board certified pediatric intensivist who is also the mother of a 6-year old son with autism. She received her MD from the
University of Calgary, Canada, and is currently an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She provides
medical care to critically ill children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, with a research focus on understanding host-viral interactions, and devel-
opment of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets for respiratory viral infections. She is co-founder of KultureCity, a not-for- profit established to
provide direct and tangible assistance to families with special needs children, including scholarships for therapies, respite services, provision of
communicative devices and much more.
Treatment of ASD: Where to begin and how to move forward
John Hicks, MD
As an established physician, the CME Program student is familiar with the systems of the human body. However, how do we define “autism,” and
what bearing does this have upon the physician’s perspective toward therapy? What bodily systems and pathologies are primarily involved, and
how do we remediate these to enhance health and function and with what order of operations? John Hicks, MD, will provide a broad survey of
systems and symptoms, with emphasis on an insightful patient history, thoughtful assessment, and objective laboratory testing to guide the physi-
cian in an individualized treatment plan. Emphasis will also be placed on the use of less aggressive therapies as appropriate in a more sensitive

Metabolic Roles of Redox Regulation and Methylation: Part I: General Principles
Richard C. Deth, PhD
The ability to resist oxidation and to adapt to environmental stressors is fundamental to homeostasis, and sulfur metabolism provides the founda-
tion for these abilities. Signaling molecules with the ability to change the redox state can exert a broad influence over cellular metabolism, includ-
ing methylation-mediated epigenetic effects on gene transcription that can persist across the lifespan and even across generations. Conversely,
environmental factors which interfere with redox signaling can disrupt its regulatory role, contributing to a number of disorders affecting almost
every aspect of physiological function. This lecture will provide an overview of the metabolic and biochemical relationships that control the redox
state of cells, including tissue-specific differences.
Metabolic Roles of Redox Regulation and Methylation: Part II: Autism-specific Aspects
Richard C. Deth, PhD
There is extensive evidence indicating the occurrence of oxidative stress, neuroinflammation and impaired methylation in autism and related neu-
rodevelopmental disorders. This knowledge has assisted in identifying treatment approaches which can provide therapeutic benefit for many, but
not all individuals. Autism serves to highlight the critical relationship between the GI tract and neurological/immunological development, in which
epigenetic regulation plays a key role. The important role of genetic susceptibility can also be viewed within the context of redox and methylation-
related metabolism. This lecture will review the scientific evidence for impaired redox and methylation status in autism, including possible causa-
tive factors and implications for treatment.
Richard Deth, PhD, is Professor of Pharmacology in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Pharmacy, Northeastern University.
His recent research has focused on the roles of oxidative stress and impaired methylation in autism, ADHD and other neurological, neuropsy-
chiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.

Brilliance of Autism Exhibit
We are showcasing the brilliant artistic talents of individuals with autism of all ages. This remarkable show will exhibit artists’
works in all mediums: mixed media, paintings, drawings, printmaking, 2-D, and sculpture.
Trent Altman is a four-time award-winning international artist. He paints patterns of high analytical cubism using brilliant acrylic
color, texture, and original mixed media on canvas. Trent was awarded the United Nations Stamp 2012 for his image Abstract
Garden II promoting autism awareness on a global level.www.trentsstudio.com.
Noah Wieder is a sophomore in the severe and profound special education program at Lane Tech High School in Chicago. His
artistic talent emerged within a few hours of beginning enzyme therapy at age 3. His disability limits his fine motor abiliti es, so he
creates art by holding a paintbrush or pen in his fist.
Nicholas Gammicchia is an award-winning artist who has been recognized for his works in a variety of mediums. He is attending
college to pursue his BA. He was awarded the "Ted Lindsay Courage Award" for his character, perseverance, and courage as an
adult living with autism. "Nick's Art Project" provides art and music therapy scholarships to individuals with disabilities.
Candy Waters is 13 years old with severe autism. Candy is nonverbal and unable to communicate through words. She is able to
express herself through her art and be heard around the globe, Candy has had numerous media stories done about her art.
Lars Eikens’ interest in sculpture grew out of a vocational class at the Davia Technical Center as a teenager. Lars continued to
hone his skills at College of DuPage, becoming proficient and creative working with metals. Lars has featured his works at shows
in Chicago, Lombard, Glen Ellyn, and Oak Brook Illinois.
Natalie Totire creates paintings and illustrates children's books. Natalie also enjoys making and using puppets for both church
and entertainment.
Sean Henry is a 24-year-old artist photographer who is also autistic. His autism causes him to see and feel things differently from
others. He has wanted to be an artist since 3rd grade. Sean's art has been in juried and non-juried art shows in Minnesota and
New York State.
Beacon Day School for Children with Autism and Related Disorders is located in La Palma, CA. Students at Beacon Day School
make art under the guidance of special educator and art teacher Juli Inagi.
Andria Love is an artist with a degree in studio art from George Mason University. She lives with her husband and four children.
Andria works at her dream of recovering her second child from severe autism in the least invasive and most gentle ways.
